India’s freight gateways serve widely separated manufacturing regions. Nhava Sheva/JNPT and Mundra are not substitutes for Chennai when a plant is in southern India; inland rail or truck costs can change the preferred port.

Seaports and air cargo gateways

Western industrial clusters may compare Nhava Sheva and Mundra, while southern industrial cargo might flow through Chennai. For Delhi-area deliveries, work through inland container depots and road handovers rather than selecting a coastal port on a map alone.

Selected sea gateways used for initial planning: Nhava Sheva / JNPT (INNSA), Mundra (INMUN), Chennai (INMAA). These codes are location references, not proof of a particular vessel call or a terminal booking. Airports worth checking for a relevant cargo schedule include DEL, BOM (IATA). Confirm live service, terminal, restrictions and airport cargo facilities before booking.

Where the cargo actually needs to go

Machinery, pharmaceuticals and textile goods involve markedly different handling and regulatory questions. An export manufacturer’s permissions and the importer’s registration are separate from the carrier’s transport booking.

Inland-delivery detail that belongs on the booking instruction: Confirm IEC/customs broker arrangements, precise origin state, packaging and any licence or inspection requirement tied to the tariff heading. A port or airport name alone is not an adequate delivery address; include the consignee's receiving rules in the first quote request.

Choosing sea, air, road or intermodal

Ocean FCL/LCL and domestic rail-road combinations can suit planned stock. Air freight through Delhi or Mumbai may be viable for urgent spares only after chargeable weight and product restrictions are checked.

An inland container depot can be better suited to a distant factory than a direct port truck, but cut-offs and cargo transfer responsibility must be confirmed. Do not extrapolate inland truck prices across different Indian states.

Customs responsibility and documents

India’s ICEGATE customs portal supports electronic customs processes and eSanchit supporting-document workflows. Ask the Indian importer or customs broker about IEC, classification, permits and the required filing route for the specific movement.

Agree in writing who is the importer/exporter of record, who prepares declarations, and who pays duties, handling and destination fees. Commodity classification, origin and any required licence must be checked against current official instructions; this guide does not provide a customs decision.

A practical route-planning example

A crated part manufactured near Pune might route via Nhava Sheva; an equivalent crate from Tamil Nadu may have a better Chennai option. Confirm both origin factory site and customs filing before tendering an FCL price.

Make the rate comparison consistent: same packed goods, same origin and delivery point, same Incoterms® rule, same expected delivery condition and a clear list of excluded charges. Published transit times and prices have intentionally not been guessed here.
